E-Cig Industry Forecast – 2014

Filed in News & Politics by on January 30, 2014

This year will be another exciting time for the e-cig industry. From local to state to federal levels, we should be hearing about some new regulations in the upcoming months… So, what can we expect?

Local Level:
chicago e-cig ban
County and City policymakers will continue to exercise their authority; allowing, banning or attempting to control the use of ecigs in public locations. Chicago recently banned them from locations where tobacco cigarettes are prohibited. So now, in the Windy City, you have to enjoy your V2 Cigs electric cigarette in a cloud of dirty smoke from someone else’s traditional tobacco cigarette. Not ideal.

State Level:

e-cig regulations in floridaIndependent states have already begun regulating e cigarettes, attempting to ban them from public locations, placing moratoriums on retail establishments and establishing age requirements. Florida was one of the first states to enact an official age requirement for purchasing electric cigarette products. The Sunshine State is a nice place to be…

Federal Level:

The Federal Level is where it’s at. We’re still waiting for the White House’s OMB (Office of Management & Budget) to finish reviewing pending e-cig regulations from the FDA. When complete, the drafted ordinance will be published in the Federal Register and mark the beginning of a public comment period. Who knows what will happen when this ruling is released?

Here’s a little hint, straight from the FDA:

e-cig fda regulationsQ: Would it be possible for an electronic cigarette to receive FDA approval?

A: Yes. FDA issued a letter to the Electronic Cigarette Association inviting electronic cigarette firms to work in cooperation with the agency toward the goal of assuring that electronic cigarettes sold in the United States are lawfully marketed. The agency intends to regulate electronic cigarettes and related products in a manner consistent with its mission of protecting the public health.

Now, we just have to sit tight and watch how things unfold… Fear not, we’ll keep you updated!

Vaping is under threat from the big players since they have realized their fortunes are dwindling while e-cigarettes makers reap big. I guess many state governments collect much in terms of taxes from the tobacco industries and therefore they feel it is their duty to protect the interests of these companies irrespective of whether such protection is offered at the expense of other people’s rights.
